Boston Globe – Boston College officials are threatening to take disciplinary measures against a group of students who are distributing condoms out of their dorm rooms, calling the act a violation of the university’s mission as a Catholic institution.
In a move that has the local chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union threatening legal action, BC officials sent a letter to students on March 15 demanding an end to student-run Safe Sites, a network of dorm rooms and other locations where free contraceptives and safe-sex information are available.
Students living in the Safe Sites were told in the letter that the distribution of condoms is in conflict with their “responsibility to protect the values and traditions of Boston College as a Jesuit, Catholic institution.”
The letter, signed by Paul J. Chebator, the dean of students, and George Arey, director of residence life, says that “while we understand that you may not be intentionally violating university policy, we do need to advise you that should we receive any reports that you are, in fact, distributing condoms on campus, the matter would be referred to the student conduct office for disciplinary action by the university.”
Boston College believing that their students don’t have sex because they need to be “responsible to protect the values and traditions of Boston College as a Jesuit, Catholic Institution,” is lunacy. BC kids are fucking, let’s be real. Which is why they’re passing out condoms to each other. With that they’re protecting the values and traditions…, they’re not reproducing until marriage. Boom. Banning condoms and information about safe-sex is basically going against everything that America is fighting for: More safe-sex information and access to safe-sex products. I know with this you’re not trying to ban safe sex acts, but instead you’re trying to ban sex acts and the promotion of such acts within the university. However, you can ban students from passing around condoms all you want, but they’re still going to fuck. You’re just going to be known as the school with a high dropout rate or high infection rate because your students are going to all be pregnant, and/or itching and burning. How’s that for your values and traditions as a Jesuit, Catholic Institution, BC? Kind of shitty, huh?
